KalPa: the head coach for next season has been determined!
KalPa and head coach Sami Tervonen have signed a two-year extension that runs until spring 2029. Tervonen will continue as the head coach of the Kuopio team next season as well.
Tervonen became the head coach in the 2025–2026 season after working for four seasons as KalPa’s assistant coach. He was part of the coaching staff when the club won its first Finnish championship in spring 2025.
KalPa’s sports director Sami Kaartinen believes Tervonen is just at the beginning of his coaching career.
– Sami’s head coaching tenure has only lasted a little over a year, but I strongly believe that his development potential is truly great. All signs indicate that he will become a top-level coach internationally. Sami is very close to the players and understands deeply what kind of game we want to play at KalPa. He is an exceptionally talented coach whose message is clear, consistent, and easy to understand. This is evident both in everyday life and in the team’s operations, Kaartinen says in a statement.
Tervonen describes his years in Kuopio as exceptionally important personally as well.
– KalPa has allowed me to experience the happiest years of my life both as a coach and as a person. This has been an environment that has welcomed me warmly and given me the opportunity to jump into something already strong and meaningful. At the same time, I have been given space to grow and bring out the best version of myself, Tervonen says.
According to Kaartinen, the extension also emphasizes the importance of continuity for KalPa.
– Continuity is one of the cornerstones of operations at KalPa, so we are extremely happy that we get to continue with Sami for the next two years. The extension is significant from the perspective of the entire KalPa continuity, Kaartinen rejoices.
