The surprising departure decision of Tappara’s head coach Kari Jalonen astonished former Liiga star Juhamatti Aaltonen. Aaltonen believes that the reigning Finnish champion may still acquire a new prominent head coach.

Aaltonen commented on Jalonen’s decision to MTV Sports. He would not have expected the experienced coach to end his career mid-season.

– The last person I would have thought would quit like that mid-season, Aaltonen wondered.

Jalonen justified his decision by citing a loss of motivation. Aaltonen understands the decision, although he considers it exceptional.

– Of course, you think about a million things. Hopefully, there is nothing else, that it is just the drive. The gas is out, so to speak.

According to Aaltonen, a coach who has lost his enthusiasm can be a problem for the team.

– If I were a player in the locker room and the coach announced that he is no longer interested, I wouldn’t want such a coach for myself. It would be better for the coach to leave. The coach also has the role of being enthusiastic and inspiring. There needs to be a passion for the job. If the players sense that he is not interested at all, it will definitely show in the game.

Tappara appointed assistant coach Fredrik Norrena to replace Jalonen, whose contract covers the rest of the season. However, Aaltonen doubts that Norrena is the long-term solution for the club.

In recent years, Tappara has relied on accomplished coaches like Jussi Tapola, Rikard Grönborg, and Jalonen. Aaltonen believes this trend will continue.

– I somehow think that they will definitely bring in someone as the head coach. They will probably start looking for who the next one will be.

Aaltonen considers it possible that the next prominent coach will be seen in Tampere only next season.

– It is very possible that they will go through the rest of the season with Norrena and then at the start of next season, there will be another big name.
