IS: Rikard Grönborg criticized the SM-liiga in strong terms
Ilta-Sanomat published an interview with Tappara’s gold coach Rikard Grönborg, which the Swedish coach gave to IS on the condition that it would be published only after the league season.
Grönborg set the condition so that he would not receive penalties from the SM-liiga and could express his views on the league more freely, as he is no longer under contract with Tappara.
The criticism was harsh. He accused SM-liiga hockey of being cliquish.
– There is way too much protectionism in the league. Smaller clubs should understand that all clubs are partners. This is not understood in Finland. Here, there is jealousy towards other organizations and attempts to even hinder each other’s success, Grönborg charged to IS.
The coach who left Tappara believes there should be more cooperation in Finnish hockey.
– Look at the NHL. There, clubs know they are partners. Of course, they are competitors on the ice, but off the ice, the clubs are one. I don’t believe that’s the way it is in the Liiga. There is a lot of discord here. And compromises after compromises. That leads to nothing good.
