Experienced league referee Antti Boman, 51, is set to hang up his whistle at the end of the season. He himself would have liked to continue, but it was made clear from the league side last spring that the 2025-26 season will be Boman’s last.

– I thought this didn’t have to end yet, but now I have come to terms with it, Boman tells Iltalehti in an interview.

The reason for the decision was Boman’s age of 51.

– There was no other justification, Boman says.

– I guess they must want younger [referees in the league].

The league’s decision is unusual, as Boman is the most respected referee among the players. He has won the Golden Whistle award for eight consecutive years.
