Aatos Koivu: next season's address has been revealed!

TPS announces that it has signed a one-year extension with forward prospect Aatos Koivu.

Koivu, 19, is a product of TPS, having represented the club throughout his career. Last season in Liiga, he recorded 9 points (4+5) in 47 games.

Koivu made his Liiga debut in the 2023-24 season, playing four games for TPS. In the 2024-25 season, he played 32 games in Liiga, achieving 1+7 in points.

Koivu is a 3rd round draft pick (#70) of the Montreal Canadiens from 2024. He also represented the Young Lions in the U20 World Championships at the turn of the year.

– I have a very positive and hopeful feeling about the upcoming season, and the decision was ultimately clear. I want to stay here because the club means a lot to me. The goal is to win games with the team and hopefully a championship, as well as to develop my own game and break into Liiga properly. The summer is not completely optimal due to the army, which makes it difficult to participate in team practices and means more independent training. Nevertheless, it shouldn’t affect my performance because I work hard both with the team and on my own. I am really looking forward to the first games and I have a strong desire to show that I can do better, Koivu states in TPS’s announcement.

TPS’s sports director Mika Suoraniemi emphasizes the importance of homegrown players.

– Aatos is a great example of the club’s own player pathway: a determined young player developing step by step, with a clear goal of making a significant leap next season. The demands of men’s games are already familiar, and the next step towards professionalism is built through quality daily training and continuous development of physical attributes. It is particularly valuable that the club’s own products feel that TPS is the right environment to grow into top players – Aatos is an excellent example of this. His strong motivation and desire to develop bring healthy competition and forward-moving energy to the entire team, Suoraniemi states.
