Minnesota Wild’s star defenseman Quinn Hughes is starting the final year of his contract this fall. Contract extension negotiations have generated an unusually high amount of speculation in North America.

The biggest question is whether Hughes is even interested in staying in Minnesota. Rumors suggest that he wants to move to the New Jersey Devils to join his brothers Jack and Luke Hughes.

NHL reporter Elliotte Friedman discussed Hughes’ situation on NHL Tonight. According to his comments, it is likely that Hughes will stay in Minnesota, but making a straightforward extension is not simple.

– I don’t believe that Quinn Hughes wants a long-term extension in Minnesota. And I think that the Wild and Hughes will have a meeting soon to start figuring out the situation, Friedman says.

– My prediction was that Quinn Hughes would sign a three-year deal with an annual salary of 18 million dollars. Well, at that time, Leo Carlsson and Cale Makar’s contracts had not been made. I believe that right now the ball is in the player’s court.

Carlsson signed a contract with the Anaheim Ducks with an annual salary of 18 million dollars. Makar’s price tag, on the other hand, was 20 million dollars. Hughes’ salary could be in the same range if Minnesota wants to desperately hold onto their star.

A three-year extension would coincide with younger brother Jack Hughes’ current contract. The deals would expire at the same time, and the brothers could together look for suitable teams in the free market.
