On Monday evening, the most surprising domestic hockey news of the season was heard: Tappara’s head coach Kari Jalonen is ending his career mid-season. The coaching responsibility at Tappara has been taken over by Fredrik Norrena with a contract for the remainder of the season.

Norrena is not a bad name for the position at all. He has previously served as Jalonen’s assistant coach at Kölner Haie and as a video coach for the Czech national team. Norrena’s head coaching role has been anticipated.

But is it Norrena’s time to lead a hockey team the size and level of Tappara? With next season’s head coaches already being finalized, there isn’t much time left for a new assistant coach to prove themselves at Tappara.

It is most likely that Tappara will immediately start searching for a new head coach. A probable option could be found from a competitor in the Liiga.

Tappara’s sports director Janne Vuorinen previously served as the sports director of Ässät for three seasons. One of his recruitments was head coach Jarno Pikkarainen, who has propelled his team to great heights this season despite numerous injuries.

Previously, Vuorinen has brought familiar faces from Ässät to Tappara. In the summer, forward Dylan Fabre joined Tappara after spending three seasons in Pori.

Pikkarainen’s contract with Ässät ends after this season. He is certainly a hot name in the coaching market, but is he hot enough for Tappara to take an interest?
