Mestis club made strong acquisitions – caught a Liiga champion
Joensuu Kiekko-Pojat has made two strong signings for the Mestis level for the next season. The team from Joensuu, which has also been aiming for a league spot for next season, announced on their website on Wednesday that they have strengthened their defense with Onni Korkka (in the article image) and Valtteri Koskela.
Korkka, 24, arrives in Joensuu from Jokerit. The 187-centimeter defender, who won the Finnish championship with Lukko, has played 90 regular season games in the Liiga during his career. In the 2023–2024 season, Korkka won the Mestis defenders’ scoring race with 13 goals while playing for TUTO.
Koskela, 23, has also played 89 games in the Liiga. For most of this season, Koskela represented IPK, which plays in the Mestis, where the well-moving defender scored 16 points with 2 goals and 14 assists in 35 regular season games. In the playoffs, he played 12 games with 2 goals and 3 assists for a total of 5 points.
Koskela has celebrated winning the Mestis championship once in his career.
