Petri Matikainen will continue as the head coach of JYP for the 2027–2028 season, reports Iltalehti. The current contract ends after this season.

In his second season coaching JYP, Matikainen’s team has started the autumn strongly. Out of ten matches, they have secured seven victories, and the team from Jyväskylä is fifth in the league.

The ranking does not tell the whole story of the early season: Jukurit, ahead of JYP, has played four more matches, and Kärpät three. JYP is considered one of the biggest favorites for the championship in the league.

The 59-year-old Matikainen crossed the 600 regular season games mark as a coach in the league at the beginning of October. He also has experience from the KHL, Switzerland, and Austria, as well as from the coaching staff of the Lions, with whom he won the world championship in the spring of 2011.

Next, JYP will face Lukko at home on Wednesday.
