Experienced forward Joonas Rask, 36, is still without a contract. However, the player who represented Kiekko-Espoo last season is not yet ready to end his career.

Rask tells Helsingin Sanomat that he has been keeping in shape and training on the ice with other players who are also without contracts.

– I still have energy for hockey both physically and mentally. I have watched a lot of games. I have the desire to get back on the ice, Rask says.

Last season at Kiekko-Espoo was disrupted due to injuries. Rask played only 24 regular-season games with stats of 4+3. An injury that occurred at the start of the season recurred twice.

– I believe I was still able to play at a good level and be beneficial to the team when I got back into shape. It eats at you when you can’t play nearly the full number of games, but it felt good when I was able to play.

At the beginning of the season, Rask has mostly spent time in the stands. He has attended home games of his former teams HIFK, Jokerit, and Kiekko-Espoo.

– Of course, I miss the game. You learn to appreciate what hockey gives you in both good and bad times. It’s such a great game, Rask says.

– And of course, I realize that there aren’t many playing years left.

Rask has received inquiries from Central Europe, but none of the options have yet been enticing enough.

Returning to the league interests Rask, but he is also keeping the doors open for opportunities abroad.

– This league system and everything is certainly appealing. It puts you to the test, but that’s how it should be. It reveals everything. It would be great to be a part of it. On the other hand, my situation also allows me to be open to other countries, Rask says.
