Helsinki IFK suffered its third home loss of the season on Friday as JYP took the points from Nordenskiöldinkatu with a score of 4–3.

SuomiKiekko interviewed the home team’s head coach Olli Jokinen after the match.

– A tough game against the league leaders. We played a good and even first period, but in the second period, the opponent got the upper hand. Three penalties there, and that started to shift the flow of the game towards the opponent. The third period was again evenly played. A close game, Jokinen summarized.

Petri Matikainen‘s JYP continues to lead the league with a clean record after Friday’s victory, following seven matches.

– A good opponent, a well-coached and well-structured team. You can see they’ve been together for a year, Jokinen commented.

Normally, IFK’s loudest supporters are located in sections B4, B5, and C1 during matches, but for the JYP game, the fan corner was expanded to the entire B end as a standing section. This arrangement positively affected the atmosphere.

– Amazing atmosphere, hopefully the fans stay in that end. It feels good when the fans are right behind the opponent’s goal and keep the atmosphere up, Jokinen noted.

The article continues after the post.

Despite the good atmosphere, the red jerseys’ record is now even harsher following the JYP loss. Out of the first seven matches of the season, there are now two wins and five losses. According to Jokinen, however, the direction is upwards.

– We are getting closer and closer to that desired playing backbone. After the Lukko game, we started to build on the momentum we had in that game. On Wednesday, we were better against Kärpät than in the Lukko game, and now we were able to improve again from Wednesday. One day at a time, and we will try to improve a little again tomorrow.

HIFK will travel to Lahti tomorrow to face the Pelicans. Jokinen’s team will play its next home game on October 6 against Turun Palloseura.
