A strong statement from a doctor of law regarding the league’s misconduct: “Conditional imprisonment should be imposed”
During Saturday’s Liiga round, an exceptionally ugly tackle was seen, which is expected to result in a long suspension.
Ässät’s defender Petteri Riihinen was in a duel situation in the center area and off balance. TPS’s Oliver Lauridsen came in as the third man and tackled Riihinen forcefully straight to the head without Riihinen having any chance to brace for the impact.
Municipal politician and Doctor of Law Otto Meri believes that the tackle should result in more than just a suspension.
– Conditional imprisonment should be imposed for that, Meri writes on X.
– From a criminal law perspective, this would likely be aggravated assault. The minimum sentence is one year of imprisonment.
Meri further explains under what circumstances acts of violence occurring on a sports field can also lead to legal judgment.
– The Supreme Court has considered in its ruling regarding ice hockey that if the conduct exceeds the usual severity and use of force for the sport, it may constitute a punishable act under criminal law, Meri writes, citing a Supreme Court precedent from 1997.
– “A has exceeded the usual severity and use of force in ice hockey during the game situation. A must have understood that the occurrence of the injuries sustained by B, mentioned by the district court, was a very likely consequence of his conduct. A has thus intentionally caused B’s injuries and committed assault.”
