HIFK’s Daniel Mäkiaho did not perform at his best in the Lions’ EHT tournament in Helsinki. The forward, who leads the league’s scoring chart, fell far short of the level seen in the domestic league.

Helsingin Sanomien expert Topi Nättinen gave a direct assessment of Mäkiaho’s performances.

– There is still a long way to go to international play. In the league, you can play a bit more freely and in a freer role, Nättinen said.

According to Nättinen, the difference between the league and foreign top leagues was clearly visible in the tournament. There were differences especially in players’ decision-making speed and battling play.

– You can definitely sense and see who plays in Sweden and Switzerland, Nättinen noted.

HIFK’s captain Iiro Pakarinen, on the other hand, received praise from Nättinen. The 35-year-old forward, who returned to the Lions after a couple of years off, was one of the successes of the tournament.

– He was really good and energetic. A big success. The tournament revealed a lot about his versatility and top skills, as well as his mental strength, Nättinen praised.

The Lions won all three of their matches in Helsinki. On Sunday, they defeated Sweden 3–2.
