A very strong top name has appeared in the market for next season’s head coaches in the league.

The long-time head coach of the Swiss national team, Patrick Fischer, 50, is being taken to Finland for next season. According to Czech journalist Vojtěch Tuman, as many as four Liiga clubs are interested in the services of the experienced top coach.

Tuma names the interested clubs as Tappara, TPS, Ässät, and Kiekko-Espoo.

National team career ended in controversy

Fischer is an internationally highly accomplished head coach. He led the Swiss national team from 2015 to the spring of 2026 and guided the country to three World Championship silver medals in 2018, 2024, and 2025.

However, his national team career ended under unusual circumstances. Fischer was dismissed in the spring after it was revealed that he had used an inappropriate COVID certificate at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) imposed a four-year ban on Fischer. The penalty only affects national team activities, so it would not prevent him from working as a head coach at the club level.

Fischer’s potential move to Liiga would also be one of the most notable foreign coaching acquisitions in Liiga in recent years.
