Patrik Laine is without a team, but he is one of the most interesting names on the free agent market.

Laine, 28, only played five games last season with the Montréal Canadiens. The previous season was 52 games long, during which the Tampere forward scored 20+13 in 52 games.

NHL reporter David Pagnotta recently discussed the atmosphere surrounding Laine’s contract situation on the Daily Faceoff podcast.

According to him, teams are interested in Laine, but they are only willing to offer a low base salary.

Teams might be willing to offer the Finnish sniper deals worth around a million dollars, where the rest of the millions Laine would have to earn as bonuses based on his performance on the ice.

This is because NHL teams are not willing to take risks and spend a large part of their salary cap on a forward whose recent seasons in the league have been inconsistent.

In addition to Laine, another interesting Finnish name on the free market is Eeli Tolvanen, who is generally considered one of the best available forwards.

David Pagnotta: The sense that I'm getting with respect to Patrik Laine is, teams are probably looking at him going alright, we'll give you a million bucks and we can slap on bonuses...but if you want more...as a base salary, you're not getting it from us - DFO Rundown (7/2)
