KooKoo’s head coach Kai Suikkanen, 67, commented in his colorful style on the surprising decision of his long-time friend Kari Jalonen to end his coaching career.

Suikkanen told Ilta-Sanomat in an interview that he understands Jalonen’s decision very well. Jalonen, who left his position as head coach of Tappara, announced his retirement on Monday.

– If you feel that your heart is no longer in it, then what is there to hang around for? Then a decision must be made. In the long run, it is in everyone’s best interest. Above all, one must think of him.

Suikkanen did not hold back his words as he continued to comment on his friend’s decision.

– The man is an excellent coach and has had a long career. If suddenly it feels like the flame is going out, then damn, it goes out. There’s nothing you can do about it.

Suikkanen and Jalonen’s friendship goes back to their childhood years. The duo met in Oulu and later even played in the same line in the SM-liiga.

– We were kind of like a shirt and a pair of pants back then. He is a good friend and a good buddy, Suikkanen recalled.

Suikkanen also assured that he trusts the reasons Jalonen provided for his retirement decision.

– Jalonen is the kind of guy who speaks the truth. If a person feels this way, then decisions must be made.

Taking Jalonen’s place as head coach of Tappara is Fredrik Norrena, who once worked in Suikkanen’s coaching staff at TPS.

On Tuesday, Suikkanen’s KooKoo defeated Tappara after a shootout. However, the Kouvola team continues to sit last in the league with seven points.
