The Norwegian Ice Hockey Association reports that it has received a notification from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) stating that Norway will be dropped from the under-20 men’s World Championships.

The reason for the drop to Division 1A is that Russia will take Norway’s place.

IIHF is implementing the recent decision of the international sports appeal court, CAS, which states that Russia should be reinstated in international ice hockey.

Norway is the lowest-ranked team in the under-20 championships and is therefore the country to be dropped.

– We are aware that the IIHF has to make these decisions, but we are awaiting further information in the coming days. We have made our position clear, and we believe that Russia should not be allowed to participate as long as the war of aggression in Ukraine continues, the Norwegian association reports.

There are many challenges related to Russia’s return, which Norway also highlights in its statement.

– Canada has announced that it will not grant visas to Russian players, and many countries have refused to play against Russia. This gives us hope that the final word on this matter has not yet been said, commented the leader of the Norwegian association Petter Salsten.

The under-20 World Championship tournament will start in Canada on December 26 and end on January 5.
