The Detroit Red Wings’ difficulties in the NHL are deepening, as the team’s young key defenseman Simon Edvinsson is also hoping to change teams.

One of the most respected insiders in the NHL, Elliotte Friedman, revealed over the weekend that the 23-year-old Swede wants a trade to another NHL team instead of a contract extension. Edvinsson, who is a restricted free agent, is still without a contract.

However, the Red Wings have not yet given up their defenseman. According to Friedman, the team has communicated to interested teams that its primary goal is to secure a contract extension with its former first-round pick instead of a player trade.

Last season, the defenseman recorded 9 goals and 16 assists for 25 points in 72 regular season games and has now traveled back home to Sweden to await the resolution of the situation.

The Swede’s situation is yet another concern for Detroit, which has already been overshadowed this summer by the trade request of long-time captain Dylan Larkin. Larkin wanted a change of scenery after the Red Wings missed the playoffs for the tenth consecutive spring.

Larkin is still a player for Detroit, but the home crowd’s reception at the season opener was harsh. The forward was heavily booed when the announcer introduced him to the audience. Larkin is currently sidelined with an injury.

During the game against the Rangers, fans in the stands also called for the team to be sold.

At the same time, the Detroit management has undergone changes. Steve Yzerman left the GM position in July, and the team appointed Shawn Horcoff as interim GM only in September.

Detroit’s performances can be followed for free on Sunday evening. MTV Sub will broadcast the game between Detroit and the Winnipeg Jets live starting at 8 PM.
