HS: This is the situation regarding Niko Huuhtanen’s return to the League
Finnish forward Niko Huuhtanen, 22, was placed on the NHL waiver list on Tuesday. The Tampa Bay Lightning plans to terminate the forward’s NHL contract.
Swedish journalist Mattias Persson reported late Tuesday evening on X that Huuhtanen’s career will continue in Europe. Several SHL teams have negotiated with the winger, but Switzerland is also considered a possible next destination.
Helsingin Sanomat, on the other hand, reported that Huuhtanen will not be returning to Liiga. The young man’s new address will be found elsewhere in Europe.
Huuhtanen left for North America after a sensational season with Jukurit in 2023–24. He scored 19 goals and 46 points in his latest Liiga season.
This season, Huuhtanen has played only five games in the AHL with 0+3 points. He also played one game in the ECHL.
A product of Blues, he is the Lightning’s 7th round pick from 2021.
