The EHC Biel-Bienne season came to an end in Switzerland. They finished tenth in the regular season and lost immediately in the first round of the playoffs to Bern.

Biel’s sports director Martin Steinegger confirms to Blick that the Finnish forward Niko Huuhtanen, 22, who joined the team mid-season, will not continue with the team next season.

Huuhtanen’s role in Switzerland was minimal. He arrived in Biel in December and played only ten games for the club, scoring 2+1.

– Coming to Switzerland as a foreign player at that age is not easy. Expectations were high, but they were too much for him, Steinegger commented to Blick.

Huuhtanen started the season in North America, but the Tampa Bay Lightning terminated his NHL contract in December. He played five AHL games and one ECHL game at the beginning of the season.

Before moving to North America, Huuhtanen played two seasons with Jukurit. In the 2023-24 season, he recorded impressive stats of 19+27=46 points in 52 games in the Liiga.

Also leaving the club is Jere Sallinen, who has represented Biel for five seasons. He is moving to Kiekko-Espoo for next season. However, Steinegger has not yet confirmed Sallinen’s departure.

– I have heard about it too, but so far he has not informed us, nor have we informed him, that we are not interested in continuing next season, Steinegger said.

Among the Finnish players, Harri Säteri and Toni Rajala have valid contracts with Biel for next season as well.
