Departure papers for a familiar Finnish star from the league in the NHL – contract terminated!
The Tampa Bay Lightning has placed Finnish forward Niko Huuhtanen on the waiver list with the intention of terminating the player’s contract.
Huuhtanen, 22, is Tampa’s 7th round pick (#224) from 2021. He signed an NHL entry-level contract in May 2024, which would have covered until 2027.
Huuhtanen’s responsibilities have been minimal this season. He has played five games with AHL team Syracuse Crunch, recording 0+3 points, and one scoreless game with ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears.
Last season, Huuhtanen played 51 games in the minors, tallying 8+12=20 points. He has not played in the NHL during his career.
Before signing the NHL contract, Huuhtanen had two strong seasons in Liiga with Jukurit. In his most recent Liiga season, he scored 19+27=46 points in 52 games.
